The oldest part of Hjelle Hotel was built in 1896 in Swiss style, like many other wooden hotels in Western Norway from the same period. The first tourists came to Hjelle with the steamboat Fridtjov Nansen in the early 1890s. At that time, there were only simple cottages and barns at the northern end of Strynsvatnet. From the shoreline, tourists could see the Tindefjella mountains to the south, a row of nunataks surrounded by snow and ice.
Jostedalsbreen National Park Center is only five kilometers from the hotel. Right next to the hotel is the "old shop at Hjelle," which was built in 1882 and has been run by the same family as Hjelle Hotel. Today, it is a cozy café serving, among other things, Afternoon Tea and selling English porcelain.
Dinner at Hjelle Hotel:
The hotel serves a buffet with cold and hot dishes, with seating at 19:00 and 20:00. Guests are encouraged to reserve a table before 16:00 on the day of arrival.
